New goalkeeper Yevhenii Kucherenko will prove a “long-term asset” for Dundee United, predicts manager Jim Goodwin.
The 25-year-old from Ukraine has been signed from LNZ Cherkasy in his homeland on a two-year contract, with the Tannadice club holding the option of a further 12 months.
“He commands his area decisively, possesses strong technical fundamentals and displays unwavering composure under pressure,” Goodwin told the United website.
“In addition to his strong performances between the sticks, we have been equally impressed by his character and attitude. Yevhenii has succeeded in testing himself across numerous different European leagues despite his youth, underlining his desire to develop as both a player and a person.
“We believe he’ll provide immediate depth and quality to our goalkeeping unit, while also representing a long-term asset for the club.”
Born in Kyiv, Kucherenko played for the youth teams of Shakhtar Donetsk and has had spells in Portugal, Kazakhstan and Georgia as well as Ukraine.
Last season, he started 28 of LNZ Cherkasy’s 30 Premier Liga matches, keeping eight clean sheets as the promoted side finished 12th in the 16-team table.
On-loan Jack Walton had been United’s first choice goalkeeper over the past two seasons but has returned to Luton Town, with Kucherenko likely to compete for the gloves with Dave Richards.
