Steelers 2025 Coaching Camp Stats: First 9 Practices

  • by

We’re back updating Pittsburgh Steelers’ training camp stats, now looking at the team’s first nine practices (a tenth was lost due to rain). We’ll break down the data from practices No. 6-10 and compile the numbers from all nine camps below. As always, this is just one tool in our summer evaluation and these numbers don’t provide perfect context. But they can offer insight into trends and comparisons to pair with our eye test.

Keep in mind these are team period stats only, 11 on 11 and not 7 on 7.

Training Camp Stats (No. 6-10)

Quarterbacks

Mason Rudolph: 41/60 (68.3-percent) 476 yards 6 TDs 2 INTs – 7.9 YPA, 11.6 YPC
Aaron Rodgers: 28/55 (50.9-percent) 332 yards 6 TDs 0 INTs – 6.0 YPA, 11.9 YPC
Will Howard: 26/39 (66.7-percent) 263 yards 4 TDs 1 INT – 6.7 YPA, 10.1 YPC
Skylar Thompson: 7/13 (53.8-percent) 72 yards 0 TDs 0 INTs – 5.5 YPA, 10.3 YPC

– Rudolph has the most attempts due to Rodgers’ off-day during the team’s eighth/Saturday practice. Rudolph’s numbers are excellent with the two picks the only blemish.

– Rodgers’ completion percentage is the lowest of the four. A little unsettling and speaks to needing to find chemistry and connection with targets not named DK Metcalf. When targeting Metcalf over these last set of practices, Rodgers is completing 63.2-percent of his passes when targeting Metcalf (12 of 19). To everyone else? Just 44.4-percent (16 of 36).

Rodgers’ numbers also show a more conservative nature of keeping the ball underneath. And that’s with two long scores to Metcalf of 40 and 55-yards.

– Howard’s numbers are good but like Rodgers, he’s been keeping things shorter. Hasn’t taken many downfield shots.

Quarterback Reps

Mason Rudolph: 87 (15-15-24-19-14)
Aaron Rodgers: 79 (20-22-20-0-17)
Will Howard: 61 (9-14-8-18-12)
Skylar Thompson: 26 (3-4-6-11-2)

The notable here is Howard pulling away from Thompson in snap count, becoming the clear No. 3 quarterback after an early spilt. Over the first four days, Howard had just a 59.6-percent split of his snaps with Thompson. Since? Howard has taken 70.1-percent of their combined share. Howard’s pulled away.

Running Backs

Kaleb Johnson: 20 carries, 55 yards 2 TDs (2.8 YPC)
Jaylen Warren: 14 carries, 51 yards 1 TD (3.6 YPC)
Lew Nichols: 10 carries, 32 yards (3.2 YPC)
Kenneth Gainwell: 9 carries, 30 yards (3.3 YPC)
Trey Sermon: 8 carries, 24 yards (3.0 YPC)
Evan Hull: 8 carries, 17 yards 1 TD (2.1 YPC)
Jonnu Smith: 1 carry, 5 yards (5.0 YPC)

– As usual, a note running back stats tend to look pretty ugly in camp. Not a ton to note here. Johnson has the most carries of the group.

CATCHES/TARGETS/YARDS/TOUCHDOWNS – CATCH PERCENTAGE

DK Metcalf: 12/19 176 yards 4 TDs – 63.1 percent
Robert Woods: 11/14 113 yards 1 TD – 78.6 percent
Ke’Shawn Williams: 6/10 69 yards – 60 percent
Max Hurleman: 6/8 60 yards 2 TDs
Jonnu Smith: 6/10 59 yards 1 TD – 60 percent
Connor Heyward: 9/9 58 yards 1 TD – 100 percent
Kenneth Gainwell: 6/9 49 yards 1 TD – 66.7 percent
Brandon Johnson: 5/9 35 yards 3 TDs – 55.6 percent
Darnell Washington: 7/8 69 yards 2 TDs – 87.5 percent
Roman Wilson: 5/8 57 yards – 62.5 percent
Pat Freiermuth: 3/7 26 yards – 42.9 percent
Roc Taylor: 4/6 88 yards – 66.7 percent
JJ Galbreath: 3/6 26 yards – 50 percent
Scotty Miller: 3/5 122 yards 1 TD – 60 percent
Lance McCutcheon: 4/5 42 yards – 80 percent
Kevin Foelsch: 3/5 39 yards – 60 percent
Jaylen Warren: 2/4 23 yards – 50 percent
Ben Skowronek: 1/4 9 yards – 25 percent
Evan Hull: 3/3 12 yards – 100 percent
Trey Sermon: 1/2, -4 yards – 50 percent
Kaleb Johnson: 0/1 – 0 percent
DJ Thomas-Jones: 0/1 – 0 percent
Calvin Austin: 0/0 0 yards – 0 percent

– Metcalf has heated up the last set of practices. Woods’ numbers are better than they felt going through the day-by-day (another reason why he track these stats because the eye test can lie). Should note Hurleman has gotten a short end of the straw. He had three receptions I didn’t have yardage tracked and don’t count those in the stats. So he actually has nine receptions.

– Gainwell continues to be active in the passing game. Washington has come on strong after recording just three catches over the first four games. Roman Wilson’s numbers are a little better than I thought but still lackluster overall. Roc Taylor hasn’t had a lot of volume but made his plays count, averaging well over 20-yards per reception.

Drops

DK Metcalf: 2
Ke’Shawn Williams: 2
Pat Freiermuth: 1
Max Hurleman: 1
Brandon Johnson: 1
Kaleb Johnson: 1
Jonnu Smith: 1
Jaylen Warren: 1

Interceptions

Sebastian Castro: 1
Miles Killebrew: 1
James Pierre: 1

TOTAL STATS (No. 1-10)

Aaron Rodgers: 51/95 (53.7-percent) 461 yards 12 TDs 2 INTs – 4.9 YPA, 9.0 YPC
Mason Rudolph: 61/93 (65.6-percent) 669 yards 7 TDs 3 INTs – 7.2 YPA, 11.0 YPC
Will Howard: 35/55 (63.6-percent) 328 yards 7 TDs 1 INT – 6.0 YPA, 9.4 YPC
Skylar Thompson: 15/26 (57.7-percent) 132 yards 0 TDs 0 INTs – 5.1 YPA, 8.8 YPC

– Much of the same here as noted above for the quarterbacks. Rodgers’ completion percentage is low and his YPA/YPC lag behind. The good news is after throwing a pick on his literal first pass attempt, he has just one over his next 94.

Quarterback Reps

Aaron Rodgers: 135 (12-16-8-12-20-22-20-0-17)
Mason Rudolph: 128 (7-14-8-12–15-15-24-19-14)
Will Howard: 89 (11-7-5-5-9-14-8-18-12)
Skylar Thompson: 45 (6-6-3-4-3-4-6-11-2)

Running Backs

Kaleb Johnson: 30 carries, 96 yards 2 TDs (3.2 YPC)
Jaylen Warren: 21 carries, 66 yards 1 TD (3.1 YPC)
Evan Hull: 14 carries, 35 yards 1 TD 1 fumble (2.5 YPC)
Trey Sermon: 14 carries, 36 yards (2.6 YPC)
Kenneth Gainwell: 14 carries, 38 yards (2.7 YPC)
Lew Nichols: 10 carries, 32 yards (3.2 YPC)
Max Hurleman: 1 carry, 7 yards 1 fumble (7.0 YPC)
Jonnu Smith: 1 carry, 5 yards (5.0 YPC)

– Only real takeaway here is backs having just four rushing touchdowns. Don’t have immediately charted the number of Seven Shots/goal line rushing attempts but it’s gotta be at least ten. Makes for a low touchdown rate. Kaleb Johnson getting plenty of carries to test what he can offer his new team.

CATCHES/TARGETS/YARDS/TOUCHDOWNS – CATCH PERCENTAGE

DK Metcalf: 17/32 188 yards 6 TDs – 53.1 percent

Connor Heyward: 12/14 80 yards 1 TD – 85.7 percent
Jonnu Smith: 8/14 66 yards 2 TDs – 57.1 percent
Lance McCutcheon: 10/12 98 yards – 83.3 percent
Brandon Johnson: 7/12 68 yards 3 TDs – 58.3 percent

Darnell Washington: 10/11 91 yards 3 TDs – 90.9 percent
Max Hurleman: 8/11 76 yards 2 TDs – 72.7 percent
Roman Wilson: 6/11 62 yards – 54.5 percent
Pat Freiermuth: 6/11 37 yards 2 TDs – 54.5 percent
Roc Taylor: 5/10 100 yards – 50 percent
Scotty Miller: 7/9 156 yards 2 TDs – 77.8 percent
Ben Skowronek: 4/7 27 yards – 57.1 percent
Jaylen Warren: 4/6 50 yards – 66.7 percent
Calvin Austin III: 3/6 36 yards – 50 percent
Evan Hull: 5/5 21 yards 1 TD – 100 percent
Kaleb Johnson: 3/5 26 yards – 60 percent
Trey Sermon: 3/4 4 yards – 75 percent
DJ Thomas-Jones: 2/3 12 yards – 66.7 percent
Montana Lemonious-Craig: 1/2 15 yards – 50 percent

– Metcalf with double the targets of the next-closest Steeler.

– Gainwell is tied second in receptions and third in targets. Lot of play as a receiver.

– Galbreath has quieted after a hot start.

– Pretty quiet numbers for Freiermuth overall, though he’s been consistently targeted in goal line work.

– Miller had a long touchdown but is averaging over 22-yards per reception.

– Kaleb Johnson has gotten minimal involvement as a receiver and as shown below, has two drops. That’s gotta improve.

– Roman Wilson had more receptions in four practices last camp (seven) than he’s had in nine this year (six).
